Summer. Finally!!
If May was any indication of where we’re headed, buckle up! Because this HR community is moving.
Our Volunteer Leadership Summit last month was one of those experiences that totally reconnects you to the volunteer work we do. Chapter presidents, core leadership area directors, and executive council all in the same room for two days. We didn’t just check boxes, we dug in. Real conversations. Honest ones. The kind of co-creation that doesn’t happen over a Zoom grid. The energy elevated to the next level of togetherness, and what came out of it will show up in ways you’ll start to feel across the community. Good stuff is coming.
On top of that…conference registration is officially open! Go. Register. Tell your people. This one is going to be so worth it!
Now, a little ask before I let you go: we’re looking for our next Director-Elect for 2027/2028. If you’ve led a local chapter or served as a core leader at the state level, this could be your next move. If you’re already familiar with how this community works…if you’ve built something at the local level…come help shape the whole thing! Reach out and let’s talk.
Enjoy June in Michigan, team! You’ve earned it.

SHRM Michigan Legislative Affairs Director | | - Virginia Continues Expanding Employee Protections with New Restrictions on Non-Competes, Paid Leave Requirements, and Pay Transparency Obligations
o Virginia recently enacted several employment-related measures that increase employee protections and expand employer compliance obligations. The new laws affect restrictive covenant practices, compensation transparency, and leave administration. Many Virginia employers will need to revisit existing agreements, hiring procedures, and workplace policies before the laws take effect. - Learn more, here
- Illinois and Maine Expand Leave Compliance Obligations for Employers
o Employers with operations in Illinois and Maine should review two significant state leave developments affecting workplace leave administration in 2026. Illinois has enacted a new leave entitlement for employees with children receiving neonatal intensive care, while Maine’s paid family and medical leave program is now operational and processing benefits. Together, these laws reflect the continued expansion of state-level leave obligations and reinforce the need for employers to coordinate state-specific leave rights with existing FMLA, paid time off, disability, and benefits programs. - Learn more, here
- Tennessee Reshapes Its Restrictive Covenant Landscape: New Limits on Noncompetes and Employer-Friendly Presumptions Take Effect
o Effective July 1, 2026, Tennessee will significantly alter its legal rules governing employee noncompetition agreements. New legislation limits employers’ ability to impose noncompetes on certain employees based on compensation levels while creating a more favorable enforcement framework for agreements that remain permissible. The law also reinforces Tennessee courts’ ability to preserve reasonable post-employment restrictions by modifying overbroad provisions rather than discarding them entirely. As a result, employers should review existing restrictive covenant strategies and agreement templates to ensure compliance with the new framework, while also considering alternative methods for protecting confidential information, customer relationships, and workforce stability. - Learn more, here

Holidays are cultural anchors. Eid (Islamic /Muslim), Cinco de Mayo (Mexican), Vesak (Buddhist), Juneteenth (U.S. African American), and countless others remind us of heritage and community.
Spotlight: Global Holidays and Observances HR leaders can create inclusive calendars that recognize diverse observances. Offering flexible scheduling, hosting cultural awareness sessions, or spotlighting employee traditions ensures respect.

Block out your diary for September 10 at 12pm, where Alon Lits (CEO of October, a workplace platform operating across the UK, US, and South Africa) unpacks the human side of AI adoption — why resistance is rarely about the technology, and often about identity, value and pride in work.
Most conversations about AI adoption treat resistance as a problem to be solved — through training, change management, mandates, or incentives. But the people quietly refusing to use these tools aren't being irrational, fearful, or behind the curve. They're responding to something real: AI threatens the specific tasks that make them feel competent, valuable, and proud of their work. You don't get adoption by overriding that signal. You get it by listening to what it's telling you.
In this webinar, Alon will share what his team is seeing about the identity dimension of AI adoption—why the people resisting are often your best people, what they're actually defending, and how companies getting this right are using AI to give people more of what they care about, not less.
Then we turn it over to the table: bring the resistance you've encountered, the team member you can't figure out, or the change you're trying to make. Expect a direct conversation about the human side of a technology shift.

AI Used Widely (Though Not Always Wisely) for Retirement Planning
Employees are turning to AI for retirement planning guidance, but AI should not have the final say. As plan sponsors, we need to help employees by putting retirement tools into context and educating participants about the risks of misinformation and the importance of protecting their data.
