Hi Friends,

As we close out 2025 and look ahead to a new year, I want to extend my gratitude to every HR leader, volunteer, partner, and member who makes up the SHRM Michigan community. This year has brought tremendous change from shifts in the workforce, new compliance challenges, evolving expectations around leadership, and a continued focus on the employee experience. Through it all, Michigan’s HR professionals and partners have once again shown what our field does best: adapt, advocate, and lead with civility.

I am especially proud of how our chapters across the state have continued to elevate the HR profession. From hosting high-impact learning events, to strengthening student engagement, to expanding conversations around DEI, compliance, talent strategy, and workplace culture, your commitment drives our mission forward. Thank you for the hours you invest, the expertise you share, and the local communities you build. It makes a difference.

As we prepare for 2026, SHRM Michigan is excited to deepen our focus on what HR leaders need most:

  • Stronger opportunities for professional development and certification support

  • Statewide collaboration and chapter-to-chapter knowledge sharing

  • Legislative insights to help HR navigate a changing regulatory landscape

  • Programs that equip leaders to support well-being, performance, and organizational resilience

We know the coming year will bring new challenges and with that, new possibilities. Together, we’ll continue shaping workplaces where people can thrive and organizations can succeed.

On behalf of the SHRM Michigan State Council, thank you for your partnership, your leadership, and your dedication to our profession. Wishing you and your loved ones a season of rest, gratitude, and celebration. We look forward to serving you in the new year.

Warmest wishes,

Monica

Legal Update

  • New DHS Rule Ends Automatic EAD Extensions: Key Implications for Employers and Employees
    • On October 29, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced an interim final rule that ends the automatic extension of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) based on timely filed renewal applications with very limited exceptions. The change will impact EAD renewal applications filed on or after October 30, 2025, and marks a significant shift in the employment authorization process.  Learn more, here
  • New Compliance Requirements Under Michigan’s Temporary Tax Relief for Tipped and Hourly Workers
    • Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed H.B. 4961, a new Michigan law creating temporary state income tax deductions for tip income and overtime pay.  The measure, which applies for tax years 2026 through 2028, will temporarily exempt these categories of income from Michigan’s 4.25% personal income tax rate.  While the legislation is aimed at boosting take-home pay for workers, it also introduces new payroll and reporting responsibilities for employers, particularly those in industries where tips and overtime are common.  Learn more, here
  • Sixth Circuit Reaffirms Robust Privilege Protections in Corporate Internal Investigations
    • In a key decision affecting how companies handle internal investigations and compliance matters, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit recently clarified how attorney-client privilege and work-product protection apply to internal investigations conducted in the shadow of potential litigation.  The ruling in In re FirstEnergy Corp. confirms that when legal counsel directs an investigation primarily to address legal exposure, the resulting communications and materials generally remain protected even if business leaders later rely on the findings to guide corporate action.  Learn more, here
    • This month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a significant decision limiting the kinds of financial remedies that the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB” or the “Board”) can pursue on behalf of employees.  In NLRB v. Starbucks Corp., the Sixth Circuit found that the Board exceeded its authority when it sought to require employers to cover broader financial consequences connected to an allegedly unlawful termination.  In doing so, the Sixth Circuit aligned itself with the Third and Fifth Circuits, which have also rejected the NLRB’s push for expanded monetary remedies.  Learn more, here

Inclusion Infusion

Diversity of faith in the workplace involves recognizing and respecting the diverse religious beliefs and practices of employees. This can be achieved by providing accommodations for religious observances, promoting interfaith dialogue, and fostering an inclusive culture. Organizations can benefit from the diverse perspectives and experiences that faith diversity brings. For more information, visit:

Supporting faith diversity can lead to a more harmonious and respectful work environment. When employees feel that their religious beliefs are respected and accommodated, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work. This can lead to increased job satisfaction and a stronger sense of community within the workplace. By promoting interfaith dialogue, organizations can foster understanding and cooperation among employees of different faiths.

Moreover, embracing faith diversity can enhance an organization's reputation as an inclusive and socially responsible employer. Companies that are known for their commitment to diversity and inclusion are often viewed more favorably by customers, clients, and the public. This can lead to increased customer loyalty and a stronger brand image. By prioritizing faith diversity, organizations can create a more inclusive and supportive work environment that values the unique contributions of all employees.

High Potential Program: Accelerate Your Impact. A 6-Week Development Experience for Professionals Ready to Stop Being Overlooked

I know what it's like to be talented, driven, and stuck.

Earlier in my career, I was that professional who worked hard, delivered results, but watched others advance while I stayed in place. I knew I had more to offer, but something wasn't clicking. Maybe you know this feeling: You're excellent at your job, but excellence isn't getting you noticed. You have ideas that could transform your organization but struggle to get people to listen. You see problems clearly but lack the influence to fix them. You've built real experience, earned your seat at the table—and yet somehow, you're still waiting to be invited into the room.

If you've ever thought, "I know I have more to give, but I don't know how to make it visible"—this program was built for you.
