Anyone familiar with Golden Tempo? This horse won the Kentucky Derby from dead last in the field. When you watch it back, you’d be certain there was no way this horse would win…but he did.  In a big way.  I bring this up because I love the message Golden Tempo sends.  Not only in the comeback story, but in the namesake of the horse. Tempo matters in organizations.  How we move.  When we move. The pace at which we move. It all matters.  When you find the Golden Tempo for your organization, you can create a comeback story.  A winning story. A memorable story.

Here's what I know about tempo in organizations: most teams don't choose it. It chooses them. Urgency piles up, priorities multiply, and the pace gets set by whoever is loudest or whatever is most on fire. That's not tempo. That's reaction.

Golden Tempo didn't win by reacting. He ran his race. Conserving energy when it didn't matter, unleashing it when it did.

The comeback story isn't about running fast. It's about running smart. At the right moment. With everything you've got.

What does your Golden Tempo look like?  Where do you need to conserve energy that you are pouring into the wrong things?  Where do you need to unleash energy now, to get a goal over the finish line?  This type of clarity is worth finding for you, your team, and your organization.

Go get em’ team,

Monica

SHRM Michigan Legislative Affairs Director

  • Washington Enacts Sweeping Ban on Non-Compete Agreements
o The State of Washington has enacted legislation that will ban most noncompetition agreements within the state effective June 30, 2027. The ban includes forfeiture-for-competition agreements. The statute is intended to apply retroactively. The statute, however, contains limited exceptions including for narrow non-solicitation agreements and certain noncompetition agreements entered into in connection with the sale of a business.

  • Illinois Supreme Court Broadens Scope of Compensable Work Time Under State Law
o Illinois employers should take note that compliance with federal wage-and-hour law alone is no longer sufficient to assess compensable time obligations in the state. In a recent decision, the Illinois Supreme Court clarified that Illinois law does not adopt federal limitations on compensable work time. As a result, the decision expands what may qualify as “hours worked” under Illinois law and potentially broadens employer exposure to off-the-clock claims.
